Novi Sad is Serbia’s second city and its most relaxed: compact, walkable and full of cafés, with its main square and pedestrian streets at the heart of everything. Across the river, Petrovaradin Fortress looks down on it from its rock, with views, underground galleries and the clock whose hands run backwards.

Downstream, Sremski Karlovci is a jewel of a town, where the Serbian church and Serbian learning flourished in the 18th century, and where cellars still pour the local sweet wine, bermet. Read the full back story below, then explore our favourite places.
