About New Belgrade

New Belgrade lies across the Sava from the old town, between Belgrade and Zemun, a few minutes away over Branko’s Bridge or the Gazela Bridge.

The back story

In 1948 the left bank of the Sava between Belgrade and Zemun was a marsh. Youth brigades began draining it that April, and over the next decades socialist Yugoslavia built a new capital here to a modernist plan: numbered blocks of housing set in green space, wide boulevards and grand federal buildings such as the Palace of the Federation and the party headquarters at Ušće.

New Belgrade today

Today it is home to more than 200,000 people and is Serbia’s business district, where many international companies have their offices. Between the famous Yugoslav-era blocks rise office towers, the Ušće and Delta City shopping centres and the Belgrade Arena, and along the rivers lie Ušće Park, the Danube quay and the river clubs that make Belgrade’s nightlife famous.

Today it is home to more than 200,000 people and is Serbia’s business district, where many international companies have their offices.

Homes range from spacious Yugoslav-era apartments, some in celebrated brutalist buildings, to new residential complexes with underground parking and gyms.
