About Miloš Veliki motorway & the road to Montenegro

The Miloš Veliki motorway, named after Prince Miloš Obrenović, runs south-west from Belgrade through Čačak to Požega, and is the first part of a motorway planned to reach Montenegro and the Adriatic.

The back story

For generations, the road from Belgrade to the Montenegrin coast was a slow, winding journey through the gorges of western Serbia, and the trip to the beaches of Budva or Bar could take a whole day. A motorway from Belgrade to the South Adriatic was talked about for decades, and in the 2010s Serbia began building it in sections, named Miloš Veliki after Prince Miloš Obrenović, who led the Second Serbian Uprising and founded modern Serbia.

Much of the work has been carried out by Chinese contractors with Chinese loans, as part of the Belt and Road. The road now runs from Surčin near Belgrade airport, past Obrenovac and Ljig, to Preljina near Čačak, with sections opened between 2016 and 2025.

The latest section

The Preljina–Požega section opened in July 2025: 31 km with twin-bore tunnels, including the Laz tunnel, among the longest in Serbia. It cut the drive from Čačak to Požega from 45 to 20 minutes and took heavy traffic out of the beautiful Ovčar-Kablar gorge, which is now quieter for visitors to its monasteries.

Towards Montenegro

The next stage, about 107 km from Požega to Boljare on the Montenegrin border, is being planned. It would meet Montenegro’s Bar–Boljare motorway, whose first Chinese-built section, from Smokovac to Mateševo, opened in 2022 through spectacular mountain country. When both are finished, Belgrade will have a motorway to the Adriatic.

For travellers

The motorway already makes Zlatibor, Tara and the Drina valley easier to reach from Belgrade, and Požega is the turn-off for Zlatibor. Tolls are paid in dinars or by card at the toll stations.
