About Dedinje

Dedinje is the green hill on the southern edge of central Belgrade, rising above Topčider Park towards the forests of Košutnjak.

The back story

Dedinje’s name goes back to the Ottoman period, when dervishes kept a lodge, vineyards and orchards on this green hill south of the city, and their elders were called dede. Austrian army maps of 1789 already marked it as Dedinberg. At the start of the 20th century King Aleksandar Obrenović and Queen Draga chose the hilltop for an estate because of its view: the forests of Košutnjak, Avala on the horizon, and the whole of Belgrade and Zemun below.

The real transformation came after the First World War, when the Karađorđević dynasty built its Royal Compound here between 1924 and 1936, with the Royal Palace and the White Palace set in a private park. Belgrade’s leading industrialists, bankers, merchants and politicians followed, building first summer houses and then grand villas. After 1945 many of these families lost their homes to the new communist elite, and Tito himself lived here; the Museum of Yugoslavia and his tomb in the House of Flowers stand at the edge of the district.

Dedinje today

Dedinje is Belgrade’s most prestigious address, a quiet hill of large villas behind high walls, embassies and ambassadors’ residences, and tree-lined streets such as Užička and Tolstojeva. The Royal Compound, still the home of the Karađorđević family, can be visited on guided tours in season, and the Museum of Yugoslavia is one of the city’s most visited museums.

Living here

Homes are mostly detached villas and a few small, luxurious apartment buildings, and they are among the most expensive in Serbia. It suits families, diplomats and buyers who want space, privacy and greenery, with Topčider Park and the Košutnjak forest on the doorstep and the city centre ten minutes away by car.
