Into the icy Danube

About Epiphany swim for the Holy Cross

Every year on 19 January, at Epiphany (Bogojavljenje), swimmers dive into the icy Danube from the Zemun Quay to race for the Holy Cross, watched by crowds on the river bank. In 2026 Zemun held its 29th swim, organised by the municipality and St Nicholas’ Church.

The day begins at 9:00 with the liturgy at St Nicholas’ Church on Njegoševa street, followed by a procession through the old town to the Epiphany plateau on the quay. At noon the swimmers, all over 18 and medically checked, plunge into the river to reach the cross first; the winner is said to be blessed with good fortune for the year. Come early to find a place on the bank, and wrap up warm.
