A great railway journey

About To Podgorica & Montenegro: the Bar railway

The Belgrade–Bar railway, opened in 1976, is one of the great mountain railway journeys of Europe, crossing hundreds of bridges and tunnels, including the Mala Rijeka viaduct, about 200 metres above the valley. The overnight train, with couchettes and sleepers, leaves Belgrade in the evening and reaches Podgorica early the next morning before continuing to Bar on the coast; in summer a day train also runs. Check the current timetable with Srbijavoz before you travel. Direct flights link Belgrade and Podgorica in under an hour. Our sister guide, the ULTIMATE Podgorica City Guide, covers the Montenegrin capital, the Bay of Kotor, Lake Skadar and Cetinje.
