West to Croatia

The motorway runs west from Belgrade across the Srem plain to the Croatian border, and coaches cover the route several times a day, the fastest in about five and a half hours (FlixBus, October 2026). Air Serbia flies direct in a little over an hour. Although the two capitals share a main railway line, no through passenger train runs between them in the current timetables. Croatia is in the EU and Schengen, so expect passport checks at the border. Zagreb, with its Austro-Hungarian Lower Town, its hilltop Upper Town and its café terraces, is also the gateway to Istria, Split, Dubrovnik and the islands. Our sister guide, the ULTIMATE Zagreb City Guide, covers it all.
