About Venecija

A Zemun institution since 1913, Venecija sits on the Danube at the start of the Zemun Quay, with a terrace built out over the water, a gondola moored outside and the largest flock of swans in Belgrade gathered on the river in front.

The restaurant was founded in 1913 by Aleksandar Štrajher, a Zemun merchant and deputy mayor, as a wooden summer pavilion by the port. After the First World War it was rebuilt with a terrace on stilts over the Danube, which gave it its name, Venice. Famous for its fish soup, it drew Belgrade’s actors and writers, among them Branislav Nušić and Bora Stanković, and it is in the process of being declared a cultural monument.

Today the swans are as much of an attraction as the food: more than 120 of them gather on the river in front.
